Different ways to be scouted?
There are 3 main ways that a model can be discovered.
Online Scouting -
A safe and effective way of being scouted is by registering with a modeling forum such as Diesel Models. They are not an agency but instead Diesel Models London was founded to help new faces break into the modelling industry by helping you get a few rungs up the ladder and into a position where you can confidently approach the agencies.
The benefits of working with a company like Diesel Models are that they have years of experience and understanding of how the modeling industry works, they also have contact details and links to over 200 reputable model agencies up and down the country. Working with Diesel Models also means that you avoid any pitfalls, as they can advise you on any scam agencies that are out, they can also help you put together your modeling portfolio at a professional photography studio that specialize in this field. This means that they only use the very best professional freelance photographers and makeup artists.
On the Street -
Another way of being scouted which unfortunately is only reserved for those that really stand out as having exceptional modeling potential is being discovered on the streets. So if you are completely flawless, of the right height, have all the right features and above all in the right place at the right time, then you could get very lucky and be picked out of a crowd by a scout. Model agency’s employee people to walk the streets and shops of London to find the future big names in modeling. If you are stopped in the street by a scout you will often be asked to pose for a quick picture, have your details taken and then be given a business card to give them a call, or if you are under the age of 18 then they ask that your parents give them a call.
Even if you are approached t is still important to do your research into the agency, because altohugh this is a method used by all the big agencies there are also others that are just looking to make money from such a lucrative industry and may not therefore may not actively seek you work. It is also important to remember that although nowadays it is normal for agencies to charge upfront fees, you need to know exactly what you are paying for and be safe in the knowledge that they will be working for you to pay this off and overall start making modeling into a career.
Approaching Agencies Directly
If you would rather not go through an online company or if you are not lucky enough to be scouted on the street, then your only other real option would be to approach the agencies directly. Your first step in doing this would be to decide what type of modeling you think you would be suitable for and then doing some research into the agencies out there. It is very important that you look into them all individually and maybe speak to some of their existing models to see if they are legitimate and that they will do what they say and actively find you work. When choosing look for models they have on their books already and see if their style impresses you or if you could fit the current style being sought
Once you have done your research in to the agencies then you need to email/post them your portfolio of images. Some agencies, namely the very high end ones such as Storm and Models One accept simple head and full length shots however if you are approaching any other agencies then it is often recommended that you use professional images taken by a professional photographer with experience in this area. You should see your portfolio as an investment so whether commissioned or prints for time, don't just go to any photographer/studio. Spend some time researching your options to ensure that you select the right one. Remember that quality is more important than quantity.
Once you have emailed the agencies give them some time, say up to 2 weeks to look at your images, and if you still haven’t heard from them then contact them directly by phone to see how you have got on. Modelling is a very competitive industry so be prepared for a few knock backs, it is important that you stay confident and persistent and although there are never guarantees, if you have what it takes then you will get work.
If an agency gets in contact then they will probably invite you in for an interview, to meet you in person and to go through your portfolio, discuss your options and what kind of work they think they could get for you. If they do not tell you what to wear or bring along with you then, ask. This shows initiative and you will feel more prepared and comfortable.
It is also important that you dress appropriately. usually agencies do not want you to wear make up during an interview so that they can observe your natural features more clearly, if you don’t feel comfortable with out make up then keep it very simple.
